Study Review and Training & Teaching Guides

Identifying a challenge…

It’s essential for staff primarily trained in working with individuals with Psychiatric Disorders to receive on-going training in working with people who have co-occurring Substance Use Disorders.

Likewise, service providers primarily trained in working with persons with Substance Use Disorders need to receive on-going training in working with persons who have  co-occurring Psychiatric Disorders.

That means attending trainings, seminars, and workshops are necessary for all staff members and service providers. However, receiving training on Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Disorders – especially ones available on-site and at regular intervals – may range from somewhat challenging to very difficult…to perhaps impossible.

So just how do we provide consistent, continuous cross-training on co-occurring psychiatric and substance disorders as well as on-going reviews of THE BASICS, Second Edition to current and incoming new staff?

Offering a training and review solution…

Design a training program – using THE BASICS, Second Edition as the training text – to be used on-site for staff interested in additional training on co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders.

The implementation of training opportunities are developed as PowerPoint presentations. The training tools are titled Subject Review and Training & Teaching Guides (located on this website) and can simultaneously serve several purposes:

  1. Offer on-site trainings on Co-occurring Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders.
  2. Provide subject review and training for the staff on THE BASICS, Second Edition.
  3. Allow new staff members to become familiar with the curriculum being used at the agency or facility.
  4. Make available trainings that can “count” toward the agencies’ on-site training hours – often required within treatment agencies.
  5. Provide training content available to any and all service providers at no cost.

There are eight PowerPoint presentations. Each one covers the content of the individual Eight Subjects (including the four drug categories and the two Cross-Training Appendices II & III). The presentations briefly – often in bulleted main points – allow the training participants to review the main topics within the curriculum.

For agencies or individuals who may not have access to equipment to actually show the PowerPoint presentations…handout packets in PDF formats with six slides per page are also available on this website alongside the PowerPoint presentations.
